According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Tuesday April 28, 2026, the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has brought fresh political debates ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The event, held in Abuja, came at a time when the party is facing internal leadership disputes and legal battles, after failing to secure Eagle Square, the party moved its convention to a private venue in the capital city.
Some party members accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of blocking access, however, he denied the allegation, stating that no formal request was submitted.
Despite the challenges, the convention attracted several prominent political figures, among them were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, their presence signaled growing interest in the ADC as a possible coalition platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party’s National Chairman, David Mark, used the occasion to stress that the ADC remains strong despite pressure from political opponents, he said the party has faced obstacles but has become more united, according to him, a strong opposition is necessary for democracy to survive in Nigeria.
Former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke also called for unity among party members, he said the convention was not just a meeting but a moment to rebuild the country and pointed to issues such as insecurity, rising cost of living, and weak institutions as major concerns.
During the event, several speakers criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, some argued that the current government has not delivered enough on key promises, others urged Nigerians to support a united opposition in the next election.
After the convention, political activities increased, key figures began holding interviews and meetings as they position themselves for the party’s presidential ticket, Atiku expressed confidence in his chances, while Amaechi also declared his readiness to run.
