Following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration that gasoline subsidies are no longer in effect at his inauguration, the NLC, TUC, and the Federal Government convened on Wednesday. President Tinubu’s declaration was less than 48 hours old when the NNPC raised the price of gasoline to 550 naira per liter. After a meeting with the Federal Government ended in impasse, the NLC blasted and came out against the decision. He claimed that as a palliative step to ease the suffering, the President plans to give each of 50 million Nigerians 5000 naira. But he asserted that the NLC and the TUC actively opposed this proposal at the meeting. He explicitly said that they had raised concerns about the previous oil subsidy appropriation in June. He claims that no agreement has been reached between the government and the NLC over the topics brought up.

He stated, “We anticipated them to clarify what the NNPC’s hike in petroleum prices meant. That was the topic of discussion, and Dele Alake informed us that Tinubu wanted to award N5,000 to 50 million Nigerians as consolation prizes for achieving economic independence.

However, we had many inquiries on the appropriation decision made by the previous administration, which was scheduled to expire at the end of June. And to that, they provided no response.
