Fresh Trouble: Wike’s Major Ally, Other Powerful Politicians Move Against Obaseki, Plot To Take Over Power In Edo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State is grappling with an escalated crisis as a legacy coalition, led by the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-south), Dan Orbih, emerged on Wednesday.…CONTINUE READING
Reports that Orbih, a staunch ally of former Rivers State Governor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who has had strained relations with Governor Obaseki, spearheads the coalition alongside prominent members. Some of them are Charles Idahosa, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), and former House of Representatives members Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Sergius Ogun.
Other key figures in the legacy coalition include Dr. Esosa Amadasun, a former Edo Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ex-Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly Frank Okiye, and former Commissioner Orobosa Omo-Ojo.
Additionally, Pascal Ugbmohe, a senatorial candidate of PDP in Edo North, and several former local government council chairmen are part of the coalition.
During a meeting at his residence, Dan Orbih issued a caution to Governor Godwin Obaseki, advising against imposing a successor, emphasizing that the governor would not have an easy path leading up to the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
Orbih stated, “The new group, Legacy Coalition, is made up of members of PDP before Obaseki joined us on June 19, 2020, some founding members of the party who earlier left, and politicians who came into PDP with Obaseki from the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Highlighting the challenges within Edo PDP, Orbih stressed the need for a governor who understands the state’s challenges. He stated, “Each time I look at what we are facing today, I bleed in my heart. There was a PDP that was united in love before the election of Obaseki, but he joined us and divided the party.”
“With the faces here, I am convinced that the way forward for PDP to retain power is to elect somebody in this group as the next governor of Edo State.”
Charles Idahosa called for effective communication with the national leadership and expressed dissatisfaction with the face-off between Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Idahosa criticized PDP leaders in Edo who refrained from condemning Obaseki’s dictatorial tendencies.
