The Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has confirmed a violent attack on its Egbedore Local Government Command headquarters in Awo, leaving several personnel injured and firearms stolen.
The spokesperson for the agency, Yusuf Idowu Abass, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that the incident occurred on Monday evening.
According to the agency, the incident was triggered by a dispute linked to a football-related altercation that spiralled out of control.
“Preliminary reports revealed the situation began at about 8:00 p.m. when a civilian reportedly fled to the Amotekun office seeking refuge after being chased by suspected hoodlums,” the statement read.
“The victim was said to have been involved in a disagreement linked to a football-related altercation the previous day, which allegedly escalated into a violent confrontation.”
Reports revealed that the attackers, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, pursued and assaulted the individual before he managed to escape into the Amotekun facility.
The agency explained that its officers initially intervened to protect the victim from further harm.
“Amotekun officers on duty reportedly intervened and offered protection to the victim, preventing further immediate harm,” the statement added.
However, the situation took a more dangerous turn as the attackers reportedly regrouped and returned in larger numbers.
“The assailants were said to have regrouped and returned in large numbers, launching a fresh and more intense attack on the command headquarters,” the security agency noted.
During the renewed assault, the mob reportedly overpowered security measures and caused extensive damage.
“During the assault, the mob vandalised the facility, injured personnel, breached security, and allegedly attacked the victim again while inside the premises,” the statement said.
“The attackers also reportedly carted away firearms belonging to the command before security operatives were able to repel them and restore order.”
The agency confirmed that five suspects were apprehended at the scene and have since been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Amotekun authorities urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of other perpetrators still at large.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring the public that efforts were ongoing to strengthen security across the state.
