Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state on Sunday confirmed that Chude was arrested in Anambra – Onitsha, by the Cyber Crime Unit of Interpol and taken to Abuja.
But he said he knew nothing about the details of his arrest.
SaharaReporters on Sunday reported that Chude was arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly likening the Governor Soludo-led government to the administration of former governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju.
While the StateAssembly election was going on in the state on Saturday, Chude tweeted that thugs allegedly operating under the directive of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – Governor Soludo’s political party, were on a rampage, snatching ballot boxes and disrupting elections in Trans-Nkisi, 3’3 and Awada areas of the state.
After the tweet, he was reportedly arrested at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday by security operatives in Onitsha and swiftly taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, from where he was taken to Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Reacting to Chude’s arrest, SERAP in a short statement on its Twitter page, said, “The Buhari administration must immediately and unconditionally release Mr Nnamdi Chude who was reportedly arrested yesterday over a tweet alleging electoral offences in Anambra State. We’ll see in court if he is not released within 24 hours.”
