In a recent interview shared by Arise News, lawyer Dr. Maxwell Opara raised concerns about political rhetoric and electoral credibility ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections.
Speaking on the state of the nation’s democracy, Opara criticized what he described as unrealistic and misleading claims often made by politicians regarding voter support. He warned that such statements undermine public trust and weaken confidence in the electoral process.
“Somebody will just come out and say they are going to give a particular candidate 3 million votes in their state, when they have only one vote,” he said.
Opara explained that democracy is built on individual choice and collective participation, not exaggerated promises or political intimidation. According to him, every eligible voter has only one vote, and election outcomes should reflect the genuine will of the people rather than inflated projections.
He further noted that such claims could discourage voters, especially when they create the impression that election results are already predetermined. This, he said, contributes to voter apathy and reduces active civic engagement during elections.
The legal practitioner emphasized the need for credible leadership, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s political space. He urged political actors to focus on policies and grassroots mobilization instead of relying on empty declarations.
