According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Iranian authorities are continuing diplomatic engagement with Washington while simultaneously facing controversy over a parliamentary proposal that reportedly offers a €50 million reward linked to the killing of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington following weeks of military pressure, political disputes, and ongoing regional instability. Analysts say Iran’s leadership is attempting to balance diplomatic negotiations with strong political messaging aimed at projecting power domestically and internationally.
According to reports, supporters of the proposal view it as part of a broader effort by Iran’s ruling establishment to demonstrate resilience in the face of pressure from the United States and its allies. Middle East historian Shahram Kholdi said the Iranian government appears determined to portray itself as standing firmly against the United States despite ongoing challenges.
“The Iranian regime is trying to, in their own mind, basically say that we are on par,” Kholdi told Iran International. “Even if you’re not on par with Trump, we are actually beating him at all levels.”
Kholdi also described the proposed bounty as part of a psychological pressure campaign directed at Trump and the United States.
The situation highlights the increasingly complex relationship between diplomacy and confrontation in Iran’s foreign policy approach.
