A report by Football transfer on Tuesday, May 18, 2026, stated that Barcelona are continuing their efforts to identify a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to leave the club when his contract ends next season. Although Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid remains the preferred option for head coach Hansi Flick, the Spanish champions are reportedly unwilling to pay the €150 million (£130m) valuation set by Atletico.
Due to those financial limitations, Barcelona have begun exploring alternative options, with Joao Pedro now considered a realistic candidate. ESPN Brazil reports that the Chelsea striker could be worth approximately €100 million (£86.7m) following an excellent debut campaign in English football.
Barcelona are said to be taking their interest seriously, as sporting director Deco was reportedly present at the recent FA Cup final involving Chelsea and Manchester City to evaluate Pedro’s performance firsthand. The 24-year-old has impressed throughout the season, netting 20 goals in all competitions and becoming an essential figure in Chelsea’s attack.
Even though Chelsea have reportedly told incoming manager Xabi Alonso that Pedro is not available for transfer if he wishes to retain him, SPORT claims Barcelona are still determined to pursue the Brazilian. The same report adds that Deco has rejected the possibility of signing Marmoush, despite Manchester City’s willingness to sell him for less than the €68 million fee paid to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2025.
Since moving to the Etihad Stadium, Marmoush has scored 16 goals in 60 matches, but Barcelona reportedly remain unconvinced by the Egyptian international and continue to focus primarily on Pedro.
On the international front, Pedro also suffered frustration after being excluded from Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil national football team squad for the upcoming World Cup despite fierce competition for attacking spots.
