The birth took place at a health center because of the mother’s discomfort. The baby girl has two prominent protrusions on the back of her skull, giving her an appearance that some likened to an alien, according to Bijji Thakur, a witness to the birth.
Remarkably, the mother had a complication-free pregnancy. As a result, she was referred to the District Hospital in Etah due to the inadequate medical facilities at the primary health center. Doctors intend to perform a Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) scan to determine the precise nature of the newborn’s condition.
Rajesh Thakur, the Chief Medical Superintendent at District Hospital, Etah, called this condition extremely rare and stated that the child’s body hadn’t fully developed. The plan is to conduct an MRI scan followed by surgery to separate the ‘heads.’ Though unusual, there have been global reports of similar cases.
These medical conditions are categorized as Encephalocele, a rare congenital neural tube defect where part of the skull has not formed properly, causing a portion of brain tissue and related structures to be outside the skull. According to the NHS, babies diagnosed with encephalocele have a 55 percent survival rate, which decreases if there are associated complications or if brain tissue protrudes into the sac.
Reports mention a successful surgery on an infant with two heads by an expert team of neurosurgeons at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). In a separate incident, a newborn faced a dire situation when the father attempted to bury him alive due to fears of being unable to afford treatment. The police intervened and, after a laborious three-hour surgery, separated the abnormal brain from the normal one, ultimately saving the baby’s life
