The condition – affecting up to one in six people in the UK – leads to nasal congestion, pain and swelling around the eyes and difficulty breathing through the nose.
Triggers include viruses and toxins in the air causes inflammation in the lining of the nose and the formation of tiny growths called nasal polyps.
Italian researchers from the University of Naples and the University of Verona, tracked 53 men aged between 40 and 70 who were diagnosed with long-running nasal congestion.
The men had surgery to remove nasal polyps. The results, in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, showed a significant improvement in libido afterwards.
Most were classed as having moderate erectile dysfunction symptoms before the operation but afterwards it was very mild – with some having no problems at all.
Scientists believe it can lead to inflammation throughout the body, including in the tiny blood vessels that supply the genitals. Restricting the supply of blood there puts the dampers on sexual activity.
The researchers wrote: ‘This highlights the importance of nasal obstruction as a potential contributor to erectile dysfunction. Treating it with surgery can significantly improve sexual outcomes.’
