Recently, I returned home late and exhausted, my routine as a lawyer dictated by looming deadlines. I usually make the effort to be back home as early as possible to avoid interrogation but I was incredibly late at about 1:20am that night and so expected to be grilled by my wife, a fellow lawyer with an equally tasking workload. But on this particular night, I instead found her engrossed in studying a business course to boost her income different from her usual law practice work.

Amidst a sleepy debate about the course’s importance, I succumbed to fatigue and slept off. I however found myself in a serious struggle with a ghostly figure in my dream; a spectral foe in the form of a female ghost. It had its bony hands around my neck and pressed down on my body such that I could hardly move or even call out for help. Half-asleep, half-awake,  I struggled to get up and just as the ghost was about to drag me down, I jumped up wide-eyed in terror shouting, ‘Jesus! Jesus!’.

Turning to my wife in distress, I asked her to fetch my Bible, blessed perfume and anything else spiritual in the house as we had to pray. Her laughter, gentle and reassuring, suddenly filled the room. Instead of entertaining my supernatural fears, she calmly diagnosed my ordeal as sleep paralysis, and informed me it was a consequence of my erratic sleeping habits.  She dismissed my claims that my enemies were after me and told me my bad sleeping habits was taking a toll on me. I was like, “what is sleeping paralysis, ejor?” That night, my curiosity about the phenomenon compelled me to read about sleep paralysis and enlightened, I marvelled at how easy life can be with the right knowledge.

My beautiful, intelligent, fearless and industrious wife turns 25 yesterday and I marvelled at how she effortlessly navigates life with wisdom and peace. On this special day, I can’t help but express gratitude for having her as my steadfast companion. She has simplified and made life so much more easier and beautiful for me, always armed with a word of caution here, and a listening ear there.

On her Silver jubilee, I say a hearty cheers to the anchor of our union. God bless you babe.
