The previous administration of Chief Martin Elechi constructed a new secretariat for workers in the state and relocated the secretariat to the centenary city, the new government house, Abakalikki the state capital.
But some of the buildings are now in deplorable conditions. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is one of them.
New Telegraph visited the ministry on Thursday and saw the building dilapidated with many offices destroyed as a result of a windstorm. The offices have been in their deplorable condition for months now.
The new Commissioner for the Ministry, Oguzor Offia Nwali described the terrible condition of the Ministry as unacceptable.
Addressing the staff of the Ministry while assuming office, Nwali directed that reports on the condition of the Ministry be brought to him on Monday and vowed to rehabilitate it to enable the workers to work effectively.
“It is unfortunate that I met a very dilapidated building and I don’t know how I will be operating. I am too young to oversee a Ministry in this type of situation.
“I must be in an environment where I can think well where if I am signing a document I can think properly. I can’t be in an environment where I cannot even think well, not to think of even signing well.
“ So, we will look at the whole offices one by one, get records of whatever that is happening in those offices and where we are having problems. Some of the roofs are even falling down, we look at them holistically. We are going to run this office in a way that you will be happy with me and I will be happy with you.
“I am directing that we take a holistic assessment of these dilapidated offices; from my own office to other offices. We are going to make our offices the best so that we can work effectively to move the ministry forward.
“We need to think of what to do to see these offices rehabilitated. I saw some that are filled with water. You cannot be moving from one office to another office, to another office because rain is pushing you. We need to know why you can’t be in your original office. If it is the roof, we will find a way of getting people to come and fix it. If it is the windows, we will fix it.
“Whatever it is, I need the report on my table on Monday morning. What I need on that table is what we will do in those offices that I saw water inside. I saw a file on the ground and I saw water close to the file and I know that water is already under the file”, he stated….CONTINUE READING
