According to Mr Bangurah, politicians should conduct themselves in a peaceful manner as they await the results.
He advised Sierra Leone politicians to learn from Peter Obi who had sought legal action after losing the election to President Bola Tinubu.
“I have always referred to Peter Obi, we all know the promise he held when the elections were being conducted and almost anybody who is anything in Nigeria threw their support, but when the result came out, otherwise, he didn’t call his supporters to the street to wreak havoc. He took the legal path and by that way, he was able to save his country from chaos.
“So, we will encourage all our politicians to learn from that example. Leadership is about self restraint and leadership is about selflessness. So, we expect that our politicians will demonstrate this. The process has been peaceful so far, let us continue to be peaceful and to promote the interest of our country.”
Recall that in the February 25 election, Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC was declared winner after polling 8.79 million votes, beating his opponents, Atiku Abubakar, who scored 6.98 million and Obi of the Labour Party recorded 6.1 million votes respectively.
This led to Peter Obi and Atiku challenging Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
Sierra Leone is electing members of parliament and local councillors in what will be the fifth election since the end of the country’s civil war, 21 years ago.
The election is said to be a contest between the president and candidate of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Julius Bio, and Samura Kamara, the flagbearer of the All Peoples Congress (APC)….CONTINUE READING
