Dr Ajakaiye, who was the Director of Research at NITR until his appointment, replaces the former Director General, Mrs Felicia N.C. Enwezor, who was mandatory retired.
An appointment letter reads, “I am directed to inform you that following the mandatory retirement of Mrs Felicia N.C. the Honourable Minister has approved that you oversee the affairs of the office of the Director-General Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis and Onchocerciasis (NITR) with immediate effect.
“You are however to note that this assignment terminates on the appointment of a substantive Director-General for the Institute,” the letter signed by the Director of Human Resource Management, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Baba Ibrahim Hassan on behalf of the Minister and dated March 5th, 2024 said.
Dr. Joachim Joseph Ajakaiye joined the Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis and Onchocerciasis (NITR) as veterinary research officer 1 on January 20th, 2006. He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Research in January 2018. A position he occupied until his recent appointment as Overseeing Director General of NITR by the Honourable Minister of innovation, Science and technology Barr. Uche Nnaji.
Dr. Ajakaiye, a veterinary doctor, holds DVM from UCLV Cuba; M.Sc Veterinary Physiology ABU, Zaria; Ph.D Veterinary Pathophysiology UCLV Cuba. He is a
Fellow College of Veterinary Surgeon of Nigeria (FCVSN) and Fellow Cuba Academy of Science.
