TopNaija gathered that the suit was brought by Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who is the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice. The case number is SC/CV/343/2024.

On behalf of the federal government, Fagbemi brought the suit. He wants all LGAs in the country to have full authority as the third level of government.

The minister asked the Supreme Court to make it illegal for governors to fire freely elected local government head or chairpersons without a reason or notice.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that Fagbemi also asked the Supreme Court to let funds meant for local governments be sent straight from the union account to those governments.

He also pushed for an order that would stop governors from setting up more emergency groups to run local governments.

Fagbemi said it goes against the political system that is recognized and protected by the law.

In the same way, the justice minister asked the court for an injunction that would stop the governors, their aides, and their guests from messing with funds that were made available to help local governments.
