The attack that claimed 10 lives at Kyitehurizi trading center in Kyabandara Parish, Kamwenge sub-county, western Uganda, was reportedly carried out by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants around 2 am.

In a statement released on Wednesday, President Museveni expressed his gratitude and admiration for the girl’s bravery, directing the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to reactivate Local Defence Units (LDUs) in areas surrounding Queen Elizabeth National Parks, Kibaale Forests, Kyenjojo and Kagadi forests, Semuliki National Park, and Bwindi National Park.

The President explained that reactivating the LDUs aims to transform soft targets into lethal local hard points to counter terrorists targeting unarmed civilians.

Museveni also instructed the State House Comptroller to provide financial support to the families who lost loved ones in Kamwenge and to the girl who escaped the attackers and reported the incident.

Condemning the terrorists responsible for the tragic event, he mentioned recent efforts by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and the Special Forces Commandos (SFC) in countering the ADF, highlighting the elimination of Kamusu as the group leader.

Despite a joint offensive by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2021 to drive the ADF out of their Congolese strongholds, the group’s attacks persist, revealing the ongoing challenges in putting an end to their activities.
