The recommendations were announced in a statement from the council’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, on Friday, following the council’s meeting between 14th and 15th June 2023. The meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and chair of the council, Olukayode Ariwoola, considered the report of its Interview Committee.
The report contained a list of 37 candidates recommended for various judicial positions. In addition to the nine recommended justices for the Court of Appeal, justices Dije Aboki, Daniel Okungbowa, and Matilda Ayemieye were nominated as Chief Judges for the Kano, Edo, and Bayelsa States High Courts, respectively.
Justice Catherine Ojugbana-Orishedere was nominated for the position of President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Delta State, while three justices; Lilian Terseer-Tsumba, Patrick Oche, and Ukande Peter were recommended as judges for Benue State High Court. For Delta State High Court, five persons were nominated, while eight were nominated for Edo State High Court.
The four justices recommended for Katsina State High Court are Nuradeen Abdulmumeen, Halima Lawal Bagiwa, Abdullahi Bara‘u Faskari, and Sanusi Ma‘aruf Aminu, while Iortyer Vihilun Fidelis, Gbakeji Michael Emakpor, Uraih Tracy Patricia Ifeanyi, and Sofowora Oriyomi Abiodun were nominated for the Customary Courts Of Appeal in Benue, Delta, and Ogun States, respectively.
The council’s recommendations come as Nigeria seeks to improve its justice system, which has been beset by corruption and inefficiency. The appointment of qualified judges and other judicial officers is seen as crucial to addressing these challenges and restoring public confidence in the judiciary.

In a related story, a correction was issued regarding the appointment of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria. The previous story referred to Mohammed Abba Umar as the Director of Operations of the agency, who was directed to assume the headship of the anti-graft agency following the suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the chairman of the commission. However, it was discovered that Umar is no longer the Director of Operations of the agency and therefore not the designated person to assume the post of Acting Chairman.
