The Nigerian Army Council has promoted the former Commander, 23 Armour Brigade, Yola, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Gambo to the rank of a Major-General.
Gambo had been reported to have supervised the invasion of the Adamawa State Police Command Headquarters by soldiers, where a police inspector identified as Jacob David lost his life.
He had in November 2023 mobilised 12 trucks of heavily armed soldiers to invade the headquarters after a spat between some policemen and army personnel under his command.
An exchange between the two agencies during a stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint had allegedly left a soldier wounded.
His other colleagues then purportedly ran to their barracks, mobilised heavily and invaded the State Police Headquarters in a reprisal.
A few weeks after the incident, the officer was moved from the state to the Heritage Center in Abuja.
SaharaReporters learnt that Gambo was one of the 47 newly promoted senior officers with the rank of Major General.
The Army Council had, on 21 December, approved the promotion of 47 Brigadiers General to the rank of Major General.
The council also elevated 75 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier General.
“The Brigade Commander of 23 brigade Yola, who was removed from Yola for ordering his soldiers to attack Adamawa State Police Command Headquarters is being promoted and rewarded by the Army Headquarters,” a military source told SaharaReporters.
