A resident of Lagos State has taken to X platform (formerly Twitter) with username, @iampossi, where he lamented how he and his friends were assaulted and extorted on Sunday by some police officers attached to Ogombo Police Station.

The victim who took to X to narrate his ordeal said that he and his friends were going to Barracuda Beach on Sunday when the police officers stopped the Uber taxi they boarded and ordered them to alight, searched them and after finding nothing implicating on them, asked for their occupation which they told them.

The victim said that the officers demanded their identity card, to which he explained that he was not with his identity card because he was still an apprentice while the two female friends with them were students, but the officers singled him out and insisted on taking him to station, saying that they took him to the station but refused to enter inside the station. They later demanded the sum of N200,000 but later forced him to transfer N10,000 to them via a POS operator.

Tagging the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the victim wrote, “Sir I made a complaint. I was extorted by the Ogombo Police Unit today 10/3/24..on my way to Barracuda Beach. On what reason sir. I have the transaction history and their car van without plate number.”

He said that “Me, my friend and two females making four” were stopped and “When we came down you (the officers) searched our vehicle, I didn’t resist because you (the officers) were doing your job. You searched me and my friend, we didn’t complain. You asked where we were going, I told him we were heading to Barracuda Beach to have fun.”

According to him, they tried to make calls “but all they could do was threaten me that if I should call or pick any calls, they would break my phone. On what reason? Stopped the Uber ride I ordered because it was tinted. You asked us to come down because we’re four.”

He said that when the police officers asked for their identities, “We told them we don’t have them since I’m an apprentice and my friend worked at the Island and the two girls didn’t bring it along with them, so the policemen faced me personally and forcefully asked me to enter their van without a licensed plate.

“They drove me to their station and parked directly to the front of the station and took me out. I was still asking what my offense was, they asked me to bail myself out or they took me to the station. I told them it will be better we just go into the station

“They forcefully asked me to send N200,000. I was amused. Without any offense I should bail myself out? They called a POS cashier opposite the station and I transferred N10,000 to him.”

Reacting to the victim’s complaint, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin simply posted the Lagos Police Command Complaints Response Unit X handle in the comment section.

SaharaReporters’ efforts to get the comment of the police on the incident and the action the police had taken failed as the police spokesperson did not answer calls made to his phone number nor respond to a message sent to him till the time of filing this report.
