Pastor Joshua Caleb of Holy Day Ministries in Abuja revealed that Kumuyi’s sermon isn’t sitting well with his fellow pastors whom he refused to reveal their identites.
While speaking with our correspondent on Saturday, the cleric said: “Some of my friends and colleagues aren’t happy. They said Kumuyi is belittling the church even though giving to the poor is good.
“Some of them said they no longer hold Kumuyi in high esteem for asking people to shun giving offerings in the church, but rather to the poor.
“As for me, there’s no need to gang up against Dr Kumuyi because I share his view. Giving these days shouldn’t be to people or organizations that are well to do. There’s poverty, hardship and hunger in Nigeria. Giving to the poor, i believe is what God will cherish the most.”
Kumuyi who made the statement in a viral video was heard telling his church congregation that Christians should not spend all their money on building churches but also help their poor neighbours who can’t afford basic life needs.
Kumuyi narrated how a preacher had instructed his members to give monies meant for offering to the poor and unemployed people around them.
Recall that a controversial OAP, Daddy Freeze had rebuked some Nigerian pastors over their ostentatious lifestyle while their members lived in abject poverty.
Freeze was quoted to have said, “When I started going against tithe, there’s no Nigerian pastor that didn’t respond.
“I just came and read the bible to them: Deuteronomy chapter 14, if you read from verse 22, it said, ‘Eat your tithe by yourself’. I read it.”
Kumuyi noted that it is good to build the church but while building, Christians must remember their neighbours dying of hunger.
He said, “Look at all this offering we’re collecting. This church has silver and gold.”
