The Senate has passed constitutional amendment bills seeking to establish state police across the country.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the proposed amendments seek to create a legal framework for state-controlled police forces alongside the existing federal police structure, with the aim of strengthening security, improving intelligence gathering, and enabling quicker responses to local threats.
The passage by the Senate represents a major milestone in efforts to address growing concerns over insecurity across various parts of the country, including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal violence.
For the amendments to take effect, they must secure the required approval of at least two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly before being transmitted for presidential assent.
