It all started in 2013 when their parents, David and Yonette, lost their home in Queens, New York City, and the sisters began jumping from one family member’s and friend’s home to the next.
Two years into their ordeal, David told his girls, who had been trying to attend school while traveling every few months, that he didn’t want their circumstances to prevent them from receiving an education.
The six oldest Lawrence sisters, who were in late elementary and middle school at the time, were enrolled in a homeschool program with hopes of one day receiving their GED.
Not only did they all earn their GEDs in 2019, but they also attended Nassau Community College on Long Island. After graduating two years later, they went on to enroll at SUNY Old Westbury, where they earned their bachelor’s degrees in public health in May.
“I’m so happy they’ve done this together,” says David. “I always tell them, ‘Life’s not fair. And when it throws you a curveball, you gotta adjust to it and keep going.’”
The siblings are currently working on their Master’s Degrees in Public Health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and will go on to enroll in nursing school.
