Umahi spoke through his deputy, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, during the May Day celebration at Pa Ngele township stadium, Abakaliki.
He said, “In this month, we shall be paying off the balance of pension which stands today at about ₦480,000,000.00. It is good to note that no pension is owed in all our Local Government Areas.
“In the areas of gratuity, the balance for the state is said to be about ₦4,200,000,000.00. My government shall be paying off 25%of this balance in May and the next government shall pay off the balance when we get our stamp-duty refund.
“For Local Government Areas, the actual figure is being worked out but ₦500,000,000.00 will be paid in May while the balance will be paid off with Local Government Area refund of Sure-P and stamp duty. We must note that pensions and gratuities were almost not paid from the creation of the state.
“My government when we came on board engaged in paying billions of naira to defray these debts and what I stated above is the status position.
I have approved our exit package of ₦10,000.00 to all workers of state and Local Government Areas which shall be added to their May salary and paid to them.
“I have approved ₦300,000,000.00 intervention fund to EBSU to further assist them in their payment of salaries while David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital and the University shall get ₦100,000,000.00 each to help them continue their infrastructure from the point where we had stopped due to no money”.
In a joint statement read by the state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Prof. Oguguo Egwu, the workers called on the state government to rejig the civil service.
“Your Excellency Sir, there are lots of issues which we believe can be described as issues you can handle with the touch of Midas. They include rejigging the Ebonyi state civil service through the employment of secretarial staff and other cadres for maximum efficiency.
“Implementing judiciary autonomy and approved welfare packages for judiciary workers in the state, reinventing Ebonyi State University through increased subventions and infrastructural developments.
Others are reinvigorating Ebonyi State College of Education by increasing subventions for improved enrolment”; recounting the achievement of Gorvernor Umahi.
Rhey further called on him to exhibit completeness in his scheme by making the lives of
workers better and the best “for us to remain that typical example of workers serving under a welfarist governor.
“Your Excellency Sir, some of these plights include engagement of more teachers in our public primary and secondary schools in the state.
“Sir, in your desire to enhance the quality of life and education of our children. We believe that this is a good time to engage or initiate the engagement of more teachers in our Primary and Post Primary Schools.
“As a man with principles that benefit the future, we believe that engaging more qualified teachers at all levels, will not only bring your dreams alive, it will also project the Ebonyi dream of having quality, dependable and self-sustaining team of youth in the future. Furthermore, it will encourage enrolment of Ebonyi people into the State College of Education, Ikwo.
“Engagement of more Doctors, Nurses and other Healthcare professionals in the State: Your Excellency Sir, the renovations of infrastructure in various Secondary Heath Care Centres (General Hospitals) that are already completed in the LGAs have been described by many, as an unparalleled approach to Healthcare development in Nigeria.
“However, drawing from the challenges of understaffing, the quality of healthcare rendered at these centres does not match the quality of facilities there-in. We therefore, in all humility, urge you to engage more healthcare givers-doctors, nurses, health scientists and technicians, pharmacists etc, in these centres…..CONTINUE READING
