The intention to incorporate a provision that specifies penalties for those who default on the new minimum wage legislation, which will be enacted following the reception of the Wage Award Bill from President Bola Tinubu, was announced by the National Assembly.

Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate spokesperson, revealed this development and elaborated that the lawmakers would hasten the approval of the Wage Award Bill upon its receipt from President Tinubu.

Upon the National Assembly’s return from the Sallah recess on July 2, the President is expected to submit the bill, as suggested by Adaramodu during his statement.

During his address on Democracy Day, the President pledged to submit a bill regarding the new minimum wage to the National Assembly in the near future.

Disagreements between the Federal Government and labour unions have persisted over the new minimum wage, with union leaders demanding N250,000, while the Federal Government and the OPS proposed N62,000.

State governors, on the other hand, maintained that a minimum wage exceeding N60,000 would not be sustainable.

The government’s proposed amount of N62,000 has been consistently rejected by labour unions, who consider it to be insufficient to meet basic needs.
Chris Onyeka, the Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, firmly stated that Organised Labour would not endorse either the N62,000 proposal

or the N100,000 suggestion put forth by certain individuals and economists.
