Tunisia was brought into the world as a Christian nation, but it became Islamic when it was taken over by the strong Arab army as Islam moved throughout western Saudi Arabia.
It was investigating this progress of religion in the Tunisian country that Bassma began to peruse the Bible and ran across the difference in the way Jesus treated women compared to how Islam treated them. While the Quran defines them as inferior individuals, the Scriptures report Christ valuing women.
“I was feeling like I didn’t fit in with Islam as a woman,” she told 100 Huntley Street. The young college student had discovered the treasures of the Word of God, and all her Islamic thinking, which she had believed in since childhood, ended up crumbling.
Finding Joy And Freedom In Jesus
“As soon as I turned into a Christian, I didn’t know I wasn’t Muslim anymore. I just knew I was following Jesus,” she said. “Immediately, I told everybody everywhere, because I was joyful.”
Bassma’s Muslim family was not pleased with her conversion to the Christian faith and cut ties with her. Yet, the young woman kept her faith in Christ and continued to work with Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) in Canada, an organization that helps persecuted Christians worldwide.
Working as a Missiologist and Director of Leadership Development at VOM, Bassma shares the Gospel that once touched her with other women in the Islamic world through the web and assists them in facing persecution as they become Christians.
“The Church is growing, it’s really flourishing in North Africa and the Middle East. Despite the danger, lots of people come to Christ every day. The reports from this region of the world are encouraging and give us hope,” the former Muslim told Mission Network News.
Today, Bassma’s family has accepted her with their faith, and they are reconciled. “They know I did this because of conviction,” noted the Christian.
