The Kwara State Police Command has debunked viral reports claiming that bandits invaded Oke-Oyi and its neighbouring communities in the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the reports as false and misleading.
According to Ejire-Adeyemi, the command at about 9:15 a.m. received reports of panic and commotion at Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, following claims that suspected bandits had invaded the school premises.
She said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Oke-Oyi Division swiftly mobilized officers to the scene to restore calm and ensure the safety of students, staff, and residents.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the alarm was raised by a woman who rushed into the school premises claiming that bandits had arrived in the area,” Ejire-Adeyemi stated.
“The unverified claim triggered panic among students and teachers, leading to a temporary disruption of academic activities.”
She added that a thorough assessment of the situation confirmed there was no bandit attack or any security breach in the community or the state at large.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekimi, psc, mnips, strongly condemned the spread of false security alerts, noting that such rumours create unnecessary fear, panic, and public disorder.
“He notes that the dissemination of unverified information, particularly on sensitive security matters, undermines public confidence and may divert critical security resources from genuine emergencies,” the statement added.
Ejire-Adeyemi urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them that the police have launched efforts to identify the woman who raised the false alarm.
She warned that the individual, once identified, will be invited for questioning and prosecuted in accordance with relevant laws on spreading false information and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
