According to a Punch News report published on Monday, May 11, 2026, a former Kano State Governor and leader of the Rabiu Kwankwaso led Kwankwasiyya Movement has said northern political leaders carefully assessed possible political allies before settling on Peter Obi as their preferred partner for the 2027 presidential campaign.
Kwankwaso disclosed this while addressing party loyalists and political stakeholders during a recent engagement, noting that the decision followed extensive consultations among key leaders across northern Nigeria.
He said the process involved identifying individuals with the competence, integrity and vision needed to work collectively toward repositioning the country.
According to him, the political situation in Nigeria requires a leadership alliance built on trust, sincerity and commitment to national development.
Kwankwaso explained that after considering several options, the northern leadership concluded that Obi stood out as the most suitable figure to partner with for the task ahead.
“I looked around together with our leadership in the north to say, okay, who do we think is capable? Who can come and work together with us honestly so that we can move this country? Along the line, we realised that Peter Obi is at the forefront of it. That’s why we all accepted to work together,” he said.
The former governor stressed that the alliance was not driven by personal ambition but by what he described as a shared determination to rescue Nigeria from economic hardship and governance challenges.
He also called on Nigerians to focus on competence and credibility when making political decisions ahead of the 2027 general election.
Political observers believe the comments may further fuel discussions surrounding possible coalition talks ahead of the next election cycle, especially among opposition forces seeking to challenge the ruling party.
The remarks come amid increasing political realignments across the country as parties and influential leaders begin strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
