Two Internet fraudsters get sentences from Kano Court

As reported by Punch, a Kano State High Court, presided over by the esteemed Justice Ibrahim Musa Karaye, has handed down a three-year prison sentence to Benjamin Okechukwu Udeagwu and Benjamin Amos Olamide for their involvement in cyber-related crimes. The convictions were secured following the admission of guilt by the two fraudsters in response to distinct charges presented by the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).…CONTINUE READING
Udeagwu faced charges of fraudulent impersonation as a United States citizen, Brad George, leading to the unlawful acquisition of $50 in September 2023. Olamide, on the other hand, was accused of deceitfully posing as Terry Vince from the United States of America through a false Gmail account in 2022, convincing victims to transfer $500.
In response of their guilty pleas, counsels from the EFCC, Abubakar Hassan Elbadawi and Fatima Mustapha, implored the court to deliver appropriate convictions and sentences. Conversely, the defense counsels for the defendants, M.J Ella and M.E Ogah, sought leniency, highlighting that both convicts were first-time offenders who expressed remorse for their actions.
Considering these pleas, Honorable Justice Karaye decreed a one-year prison term or a fine of N20,000 for Udeagwu, while Olamide received a two-year prison sentence with a corresponding fine of N20,000. These sentences were meted out subsequent to the arrests of the duo by EFCC operatives on charges related to impersonation and internet-based offenses, underscoring the legal repercussions of such illicit activities.
