US Closes Embassy in Lagos, Abuja to Mark Democracy Day Holiday

The United States has announced the temporary closure of its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos in observance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day holiday.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a notice on Friday, stating that both offices will be closed on June 12, 2026.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 12, 2026, in observance of the Democracy Day holiday,” the mission said.

The closure aligns with the Nigerian government’s declaration of Friday as a public holiday to mark Democracy Day.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his Democracy Day message, urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country despite its current challenges, calling for continued faith in national progress.
