The former leader got married at the age of 31. He was adorned in his military uniform, with several members of high society present.
Gowon rode to the church in a Mercedes Benz limousine as excited Nigerians, including school children trooped out to the streets to catch a glimpse of the Head of State.
Despite the many happy faces, many raise concerns at the timing of the wedding as it took place during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970).
Moments after the church wedding, the newly wedded couple was escorted by motorcycles and cars, Gowon and Victoria were reported to have left in a convertible Rolls Royce, as they waved to the crowd who cheered the first family.
According to witnesses, the wedding had a large turnout of people. It was said to have been very peaceful.
