In this article in line with a publication on Healthline, we are going to have a look at some the reasons why pregnant women often have Varicose Veins in the legs. But before we get down to business, there is need to understand what a Varicose vein is.

A Varicose vein is a dilated vein or the pooling of blood in the veins that can cause a form of swelling that is dark red in colour. Pregnant women often have these swellings in the legs and below are the causes;

1. This is due to an Increase in the blood volume during pregnancy. As we all know, when a woman gets pregnant, the blood volume in her body, will surely increase causing changes such as swelling or raising risk of varicose veins.

2. Surging hormones; there are lots of hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy. Some of these hormone changes can cause swelling of the veins in the leg.

3. Another cause of varicose veins in the legs is, a decrease in the rate at which blood moves from the legs up to the pelvic region. Pregnancy like I always reiterate is a very difficult stage in the life of every woman and as such, women need maximum care and love to be able to pass the stage safely considering the numerous bodily changes and psychological effects it can have.
