HIV/AIDS stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV is an infection that weakens the body’s immune system and leaves it vulnerable to other infections and diseases. AIDS is the final stage of HIV, when the body’s immune system has been completely weakened and can no longer fight off infections and diseases, leading to death. HIV/AIDS is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretion, and breast milk.
