Israel claims its troops fired because they felt threatened by the crowd and wanted to prevent an attack on the humanitarian aid convoy. Most of the fatalities were trampled in the chaos.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry speaks of “another crime against humanity.”

The UN – but also countries such as France, Italy and Germany – are calling for an independent investigation into what happened.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the incident, as he said on X, formerly Twitter.

“The people of Gaza urgently need help. But the UN has not been coming to the north of Gaza for more than a week,” said Guterres.
