Nigerian Navy and Turkish Firm Sign Agreement to Remodel NNS ARADU Warship
The Nigerian Navy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkish firm Dearson Shipyard to undertake the remodeling of the iconic NNS ARADU warship. The ship, known as Nigeria’s oldest warship, first arrived on the shores of Nigeria in the early 1980s.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Auwal Gambo, emphasized the importance of remodeling the ship to enhance its capabilities. The wear and tear resulting from extensive use and harsh operating environments have limited its operational capacity. After considering several companies, the Nigerian Navy selected Dearson Shipyard based on their expertise, competence, and capabilities.
The signing of the agreement signifies the partnership between the Nigerian Navy and Dearson Shipyard, aiming to enhance security, foster operations, and promote shipbuilding engagements that contribute to the sustainable development of Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
Additionally, the agreement includes the supply of an additional 57-meter Fast Attack Craft to support the remodeled flagship. These vessels will not only increase the fleet but also enhance maritime security operations for Nigeria and Africa at large, contributing to socio-economic prosperity.
Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Resuscitation and Refurbishing of NNS ARADU, expressed his excitement about the resurrection of the grounded warship. He emphasized the importance of maintaining Nigeria’s flagship and urged the firm to deliver the project on time for enhanced maritime security.
