Comrade Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information and Publicity, described the incident involving Ajaero as an abduction that escalated into an attempted murder.
He stated, “Contact was established with the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri, from where he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he is receiving medical care.”
“Ajaero was severely beaten, and his right eye was completely swollen shut when contacted,” Upah added.
Ajaero, who provided limited details, mentioned that immediately following his apprehension, he was physically assaulted, blindfolded, and transported to an undisclosed location where further acts of brutality occurred, at times involving the use of bottles.
His phones, money, and personal belongings were confiscated and have not been returned to him.
