The suspect, it was alleged had turned his wife, Osaretin Adun to a punching bag on the slightest provocation and the neighbors were tired of settling quarrel for them.
The neighbours were said to have found out about the death of the woman when her children started calling for help for their mother whose throat had been slit open by her husband.
Victim’s father want husband arrested
According to the father of the deceased, Pa Samuel Adun, it was unfortunate his daughter died in such circumstance. He said he got to know about the death of his daughter through someone, because he is not living in Benin City, but resides in Orhionmwon village, which is a bit far.
“My daughter would not have died in such circumstance, it was because I separated from her mother, I believe that’s the root cause of my daughter’s death, all the mother is after is money.
“When I separated from her mother about 27 years ago, she went away with the children, claiming she cannot leave them with me and has been with the children since then. I didn’t know there whereabout. I searched everywhere to locate her so as to retrieve my children from her.”
He further said that what he was trying to avoid happening to the children when they were growing up has now come to pass. “If not because of what happened to Osaretin, I couldn’t have seen my daughter. For the past 27 years I have not set my eyes on her.
Their mother gave all the girls out in marriage without my consent. If not this unfortunate incident I wouldn’t have known where my children and grandchildren are, it was unfortunate we are meeting in a bad way.
“I cannot say precisely what led to the death of my daughter, whether they were fighting over food, money or an- other woman l. I don’t know, all I heard from a friend was that my daughter has been killed.
It was about two weeks ago that my friend told me he saw a lady who bears my name and I promised to come to Benin to see her, then I heard about the bad news.” The bereaved father has called on the police and other security agencies in the state to help him go after his son- in-law, Oyeigbe, for allegedly killing his daughter, leaving behind three children.
“I do not understand the problem they had. I was called that my daughter has been killed. He used a knife to slit her throat. My daughter was pregnant when she was killed. I want the boy arrested. “I will give anybody that has information that will lead to his arrest, N100,000.
The suspect had not formally married my daughter. I was told his parents are both dead. I was giving his brother phone contact he also didn’t pick my calls. I want justice for my daughter.”
The suspect was alleged to be addicted to hard drugs, which he is believed to take freely in their community and in his place of work, but it later affect is state of reasoning, always moody.
One of the couple’s neighbours who spoke with our correspondent described the manner in which the pregnant woman was killed as cruel.
Oyeigbe’s colleagues react
A man, who identified himself simply as ‘Osaze’, said he had been friends with Oyeigbe and they have also been colleagues for over five years, working together at different sites as bricklayers.
He said the major problem his friend has is the use of hard drugs and after taking it he starts behaving abnormal, which he said he had pleaded with him as a friend to stop it, as those drugs are not good for his heath, but that he never listens.
“I was surprised when I heard he killed his wife, because I knew the woman was pregnant. Unfortunately, I was not at home when it happened. I have also seen them fighting most times because of money for the upkeep of the children and her.
“It is just that I never knew that it will get to this level. He takes all kinds of hard drugs sometimes, now, nobody knows where he is? He ran away after committing the act. But I believe wherever he is he would be regretting his action, the children are left alone and they would be the one to suffer.
“I also heard that his wife’s father claim he has not seen Oyeigbe wife’s who is his daughter for many years. Only heard about her death that was when he came.
The deceased mother and her siblings are nowhere to be found. We find it difficult to locate her relatives when the incident happened. The woman’s children were the only one left alone with their mother in the pool of her blood where her neck was almost cut off by the wicked husband.”
A neighbour reacts
A resident of the area, Mrs. Rose- line Aigbe, a grocery shop owner where the deceased woman used to buy foodstuffs and items for her children described the death of the woman as painful and an act of wickedness. Mrs. Aigbe said she had known the couple since she opened her shop in the community.
Where Osaretin, sometimes patronise, describing the woman as a gentle person, noting that for some period she had not been coming to her shop. She said: “One fateful day when she came to my shop to buy something, I saw marks and injuries on her body.
When I inquired about what happened to her instead of opening up to me, she was just laughing. She was close to me, because I see her like my daughter. “I like her because she was a calm woman, not a troublesome person. But it is a pity she was killed in such manner.
May God comfort her parents. Whenever I noticed scares on her instead of her to tell me what happened she will not talk. I never knew she was passing through a lot in her marriage until I heard that she was killed. A woman that has three children and she was pregnant for the fourth one.
I wish I see her husband I will bite him like a dog. The pregnant woman was killed like a goat.” She urged the police to go after him and get him arrested, saying he must be punished for the crime he committed. “How can a criminal like that kill a pregnant woman and her unborn baby and go scout free.
I want to appeal to women in Edo State in particular, Nigeria in general and the state government to rise up and fight for the woman and her little children that she left behind. I am pained, am a woman and a mother, nobody prays for such unfortunate incident to happen to her.
“That’s the reason I am calling on everyone to rise up and support women folks. What happened to her can happen to any woman in the state, including Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, so I urge her to use her good office to influence her husband to direct the state commissioner of police to go after the man.
I want him arrested and to tell the world why he killed the woman who gave him three beautiful children and killed the wife with the fourth one that’s yet to be born. Sincerely, I am boiling.”
Police react
The Edo State Police Command Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Chidi Nwabuzor said they have launched a manhunt for the husband.
Nwabuzor said a serious manhunt has been launched against the fleeing abusive husband and “we want to assure the public that we are going to get the man arrested to face the wrath of the law.
“We are not sleeping on the matter, the Commissioner of Police has ordered that we go out in full chest and get him arrested for prosecution.
We are assuring the women folks in the state that the command is not going to disappoint them, we will do justice to the case….CONTINUE READING
